News Summary

Fazlagica Kula, East Herzegovina, bombed

Prior to the newscast, TV BiH received information that the village of Fazlagica Kula in Gacko municipality, where 50 Bosniak families returned has been bombed, unfortunately this was not the first incident. On Tuesday night, unknown perpetrators, by launching 6 mortar shells, tried to interrupt the recently started refugee return process to eastern Herzegovina. Head of the Gacko Office for Refugee Return Dzevad Memic stated that he visited the refugees who had come under artillery attack, saying that fortunately nobody was wounded or killed. Memic stated that on 5 September, there was an incident of heavy ‘infantry’ shooting and disturbing of returnees from the villages Stolac and Basici. He stated that on Tuesday he addressed a letter to SFOR, the OSCE, OHR and UNHCR and requested protection for the returnees, because if SFOR did not establish checkpoints, the assailants would probably continue with heavy attacks.

Chief of Ante Jelavic’s cabinet, Martin Raguz, stated that the BiH Presidency expects BiH to enter the EC this year. Ombudsman reacts to Izetbegovic statement on eviction of refugees

Member of the BiH Presidency Alija Izetbegovic, in his Tuesday statement regarding the eviction of Pale refugee Sulejman Dugajlija, said that the eviction of a refugee that is banished from his home and cannot return to his house was unacceptable. Ombudsman for BiH Greta Haller reacted to this statement saying that she is saddened by this and that she is concerned by Izetbegovic’s appeal to not respect the law which is harmful to the efforts of her office and protection of human rights. Haller stated that she is afraid that this statement could seriously influence the work of Government officials that implement laws. The eviction of Dugajlija is an appeal case submitted to the Ombudsmen office in January where persons complained that it is impossible to execute the verdict on the transfer (removal) of Dugajlija and in May, the Ombudsman found this to be a violation of the Human Rights Charter, She gave her recommendation to the Government and the government fulfilled her request within the deadline. Haller welcomes resolving the case in this manner. If somebody refers to morality to underestimate rule of law as Izetbegovic did, this can mean the end of morality.
