Russia

The new Russian President, Vladimir Putin took a solemn oath at the inaugural ceremony in Moscow. He appointed Mihail Kasianov, the former Minister of Finance, as the new Prime Minister. Reported by Adis Saranovic.

Zagreb

Elections for the Assembly of the city of Zagreb took place today. Voters’ turnout was very low. About 30% of citizens voted. Official results will be announced after midnight. Reported by Gordana Simonovic from Zagreb.

Donja Gradina

Anniversary of the suffering of Serbs, Jews and Gypsies in the “Jasenovac” concentration camp was marked in Donja Gradina today. “This small place became the largest tomb in this part of Europe”, said Mirko Sarovic, the RS Government Vice-President. An exhibition called “We Were Children – Jasenovac, the Tomb for 19 432 children” will be opened in the RS Art Gallery tonight. The report was produced by Tatjana Lajsic.

Banja Luka

The OHR, OSCE and other international organisations demanded the RS Government to allow the construction of mosques in this entity. There were no official reactions to this in the RS so far. “It is a tragedy that these mosques will be reconstructed by those who destroyed them”, said the SRS Representative, Ognjen Tadic. “Construction of mosques in Banja Luka is an issue that city authorities should resolve”, said Ostoja Barasin, the SNS Representative. Omarska

The mine “Omarska” has delivered iron supplies to the “Sartid” Iron Works in Smederevo since last November. This is only the beginning of the production process. KM14 million are necessary for the production process, and there haven’t been any interested investors so far. Reported by Dragan Stanimirovic.

Ugljevik

Boro Bosic, the General Director of thermo-electric power plant “Ugljevik” has been replaced. He claims that his replacement has a political background. The “Elektroprivreda” Board denied this, claiming that Bosic didn’t justify their expectations. Reported by Aleksandra Zdravkovic.

Sarajevo

Sanjin Beciragic produced a piece on privatisation of the daily paper “Oslobodenje”. Employees of this company became its new owners. Their strategic partner is the Forestry Engineer, Temin Dedic, owner of the private company “Lignacon” from Germany.

Rijeke

Reconstruction of the returnees’ houses in Rijeke started. The infrastructure in Rijeke has been completely destroyed. The returnees hope that the international community will help them. The report was produced by Slobodanka Radojkovic.

World

Journalist of the leading Spanish newspaper “El Mundo”, Jose Luis Lopez was murdered today in front of his flat. It is still unknown who is responsible for this act of terrorism.

The crisis with hostages in Philippines continued. The Philippine President said that his Government was determined to save the captured hostages.

The EU will send their political co-ordinator Xavier Solana to the Philippines, in order to end the hostage crisis peacefully.

The UN Mission in Sierra Leone announced that rebels confronted the international peace forces, and took a few vehicles from them. About 500 UN soldiers were registered as missing or captured.

Tattoos used to be the most popular among Catholics in B&H, who expressed their religious origins in this way. Nowadays, it has become a real hit in this country, Slobodan Maksimovic confirmed.

Reforms of mental health protection have been carried out since 1993. There were about 3000 beds for these patients before the war. Now, there are only about 200. Within the reform programme, 38 centres should be opened in the Federation of B&H. Reported by Sevko Bajic.
