News Summary

Report on SNS and SNSD’s new pre-election campaign by phone

As 8 April approaches, the pressure of political parties on citizens is increasing. The SNS and SNSD have introduced a new method of propaganda: political advertising by telephone. Citizens have reacted differently to this way of campaigning. Journalists wonder whether this violates a citizen’s right to privacy. SNS and SNSD officials claim that these telephone calls do not disturb citizens, even if it sometimes happens that the telephone rings on Saturday or Sunday when citizens are resting. This method of political marketing functions through a computer system that automatically dials numbers and presents a message. SNS official Barasin says this method is cheaper and more efficient than any other is. SNSD official Cadjo emphasizes the ecological advantages. They both said their parties paid four telephone lines, each at the price of 1,500.80 KM. They added that they are not abusing the Telecom Srpska monopoly, even if the Telecom Srpska Director is a SNS member. Each party can use this system. Other can, just as we did, pay the price per impulses used and that no special privileges are required. Journalists wonder whether political parties have right to violate and intrude on an individual’s personnel privacy.
