OHR BiH TV News Summary, 23 August 1998

There was very little domestic news today.

Kosovo – After only a few days of cease fire, a strong Serb powers started a fierce offensive on five villages of Kosovo Albanians in the region of Suha Rijeka, today. Kosovo International Centre informs that hundreds of grenades drove the local residents to leave their houses.

International organisations inform of the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Kosovo. Thousands of refugees are living in the open, hiding themselves in forests. Footage on the surviving problems of the Kosovo refugees who arrived as far as Bosanski Petrovac and Sarajevo.

A lengthy report on events in other countries.

Klisa – The return to Klisa reminds very much of the returns to Jusici, Mahala and Dugi Dio. The same tent settlement has been established here after the first attempt of the Bosniaks to return to their homes did not succeed due to the actions of a group of extremists on 29 July. The only difference is a date. Mahala was in 1997 and Klisa now, nearly three years after the war stopped. Residents of Klisa villages ask themselves again and again is there really a need of waiting so long to go home to their own homes.

Mostar – The Mostar valley was receiving returnees in the villages Zeljus, Ortijes, Gubavica, Bacevici and Oplicici for the last three months. Bosniaks and Serbs returned to their ruined homes. Only in the last week three returns took place here. The representatives of the UNHCR, local authorities and BiH Federation attended them. It is very important that returns occur here, that a multi-ethnic society is being built up here, Rasim Kadic, Minister for Refugees and DPs told the news.

Bosanska Krajina – In the time which BiH TV reserved for the SFOR TV, the building up of the bridge in Otoka was shown. The Canadian, Chech and British engineering units serving with SFOR are finishing a bridge there which will bring the Serbs to their homes. Around 100 Serb families ready to return to their homes in this region, could not physically cross the river without this bridge.
