High Representative expresses his full support for the work of the ICTY

High Representative Valentin Inzko expressed his full support for the work of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) during a meeting with its Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz in Sarajevo today.

“The ICTY has given a voice to the victims where once they might have gone unheard”, the High Representative said, adding that the ICTY continues to play a key role in allowing BiH to accept and overcome its tragic past. .

“Supporting fight against impunity for war crimes means respecting the Tribunal’s verdicts and safeguarding it from those who seek to undermine it for reasons that have more to do with politics than justice”, Inzko said.

High Representative Inzko and ICTY Chief Prosecutor Brammertz agreed that, in view of the completion of the ICTY’s mandate, the focus should be on ensuring strong, independent and capable judicial institutions are in place in BiH. They welcomed international assistance to judicial institutions strengthening the capacity of BiH to deal with war crimes cases independently and effectively.
