The High Representative condemns last night’s incident in which a deputy of the Republika Srpska National Assembly was assaulted. An attack on a democratically elected representative is an attack on the National Assembly and an attack on the democratic process.
Such attempts to destabilise the democratic process damages the interests of the people of Republika Srpska. The incident demonstrates once again the importance of all those who are engaged in the democratic process behaving in a responsible and constructive manner and resisting undemocratic forces.
The OHR and the International Community will not allow those who are opposed to progress to create an artificial crisis in the work of the National Assembly. We will continue to support those who are genuinely engaged in the democratic process and who are capable of delivering social, economic and political progress in Republika Srpska.
The OHR expects a full investigation of the incident and will closely monitor its results.
