Time to Put Citizens First

At the close of polls following Bosnia and Herzegovina’s general elections today, High Representative Valentin Inzko made the following statement:

“Citizens have exercised their right to choose those who will represent them during the next four years. Now begins a radically different phase – the phase where the incoming governments make a break with the politics of the past by committing themselves to work in the best interests of the overwhelming majority in this country – the ordinary, decent people who want to build a better future through hard work and respect for the Rule of Law. At the same time, citizens have a duty to hold those elected accountable for their promises.

As a first step it is imperative that administrations at all levels are formed quickly and with a focus on delivering concrete results for citizens and of course in a manner that is fully in accordance with the law.

At all levels of government, the volume of work waiting to be done is enormous – for example steps must be taken without delay to address the continuing negative impact of the spring floods, to start repairing the country’s neglected social and physical infrastructure and to tackle the scourges of unemployment, poverty and corruption.

Let’s get this country back to work and moving forward towards Euro-Atlantic integration. This is what the people want and this is what the international community expects.”
