Bosnia and Herzegovina’s future cannot be built by glorifying those responsible for the gravest crimes of the past. A future marked by peace, prosperity and mutual understanding must be grounded in respect for the dignity of every victim and respect for the truth, including as established by international and domestic tribunals.
Ratko Mladić was a convicted war criminal who died while serving a life sentence. He was found guilty by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia of genocide in Srebrenica, and crimes against humanity. These convictions were upheld on appeal.
Glorification of convicted war criminals, and denial of genocide and other war crimes create divisions, cause further pain to victims and their families, and undermine reconciliation.
The OHR stands in solidarity with all victims, survivors, and their families.
