News Summary

Petritsch strongly opposes withdrawal of IC from BiH

High Representative Wolfgang Petritsch‘s key standpoint for the upcoming Brussels conference is strong opposition to the idea of IC withdrawal from BiH, because such a move would be premature and create a catastrophe.

In a text published by the Wall Street Journal, Petritsch said, “if we leave BiH now, the country will remain divided in three entities and would be broken down into small tribal regions governed by political chiefs. BiH would remain as unstable as it has been to date and in foreign relations would be in the defensive. (00:45) OSCE does not intend to hold presidential elections – Barry

Head of the OSCE Mission to BiH Robert Barry stated at a Monday press conference that the mission does not intend to organize presidential elections on 11 November. Barry stated that, according to the Constitution, which is the main document for the organization of such elections, the BiH Presidency members have a four-year mandate. “The mandate of the current Presidency expires in 2002 and we do not have the authorization or will to change that” said Barry. “The only possibility for this would be the appearance of a vacancy in the Presidency, which we do not expect.” The cost of the general elections, which will be held in accordance with the revised PEC rules, should be 15 million DM. The regulations will contain most of the provisions from the draft election law. Srebrenica counselors are also to be elected during the autumn elections. Furthermore, the PEC set deadlines for party and voter registration, including new and larger deposits that must be paid by political parties wanting to run in the elections. (01:57)

SDP proposes vote of confidence in BiH Federation House of Representatives

The BiH Federation Government will be the main topic of Tuesday’s session of the BiH Federation House of Representatives and the presentation of arguments for and against a vote of confidence are expected.

In accordance with the BiH Federation Constitution and delegate provisions, the SDP addressed a proposal for a vote of confidence in the BiH Federation Government on 21 March, to which the Government responded in writing on 27 April. “The Government’s response is an obvious example of its ignorant relation with the Parliament” said SDP delegate in the BiH Federation House of Representatives Sabrija Pojskic. Responding to the question of whether the SDP will support the SDA initiative to dismiss BiH Federation President Ejup Ganic, Deputy Head of the SDP Delegate Club in the BiH Federation House of Representatives Refik Ahmedinovic said that they will insist on an explanation for such a proposal and hear Ganic’s response.

01:08 IMC rejects Warriors case

The film Warriors, broadcast by TV BiH in February 2000, brought reactions and complaints that were addressed to the Independent Media Commission (IMC). The Commission responded on Monday, informing that its Enforcement Panel held a session on 11 May 2000 and concluded that TV BiH did not violate the IMC Code for the Editing of Radio and TV Programs and that the case is dismissed.
