News Summary

Petritsch opens Sarajevo Conference on Combating Corruption

High Representative Wolfgang Petritsch opened the Conference on Transparency and Combating Corruption being held in Sarajevo. He stated that fraud and corruption are serious obstacles to Dayton Peace Agreement implementation. Petritsch explained that the responsible and consistent effort of all social components would bring about a better future for BiH. BiH Presidency member Ante Jelavic stated that “we need trained, well-paid and independent state officials who will integrate into themselves several essential virtues such as unselfishness, objectivity and responsibility.” Stability Pact representative Ian Eliasson stated that fighting corruption should commence at the local level. RS Interior Minister Sredoje Novic stressed that the fight against corruption must not be given political overtones.

Frowick visits Mostar

Deputy US Presidential Envoy for Dayton Implementation Robert Frowick visited Mostar. He met with the representatives of the HN Canton, Mostar and opposition parties to discuss the position of Croats in BiH after recent political change in Croatia. “We are fascinated with the determination of Croat people to deviate from the rule that was established during the war. We see a new era coming for the people here” Frowick said, commenting on change in Croatia. He added that it is up to the BiH Croats to decide whether they want to remain in the current system or if they what a new beginning. He expressed disappointment over Monday’s discussions with Mostar officials, saying that certain issues have been discussed for three years now. Frowick stated that the issue of return, Bosniak to west Mostar and Croat to east Mostar, must be resolved.
