I feel indignant about this and I am truly sorry”, British Foreign Minister Jack Straw said at the ceremony of marking the 10th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica. He presented the message of British Prime Minister Tony Blair to the people of Srebrenica. “You are in our thoughts at this 10th anniversary. We shall never forget the horrible torture you have suffered. We wish to express our solidarity with you. In this way will we ensure that the truth of these terrible events is known and recognized. Serbia is moving from denial to recognition of the crimes that were committed here in their name. The way to absolve collective guilt is to establish individual guilt under the law. These crimes are the crimes of individuals and with the arrest and trial of those individuals we can start to say we are moving towards reconciliation,” said Ashdown. “The worst crime to take place in Europe in the latter part of the twentieth century took place here. The world’s failure to protect the people of this country and the people in Potocari in particular is our greatest shame. A decade later, Bosnia-Hercegovina stands on the threshold of formal negotiations with the European Union. We owe it to those who died to see through the task of building a brighter future for this country,” said Ashdown in his message.

Not only to the numerous victims who fell here 10 years ago, but also to those who recently fell in the horrific terrorist attacks in London. Terror is a threat to us all. Op-eds of Sarajevo dailies on Srebrenica

Oslobodjenje pg 9 ‘Continuation of genocide’ op-ed by Mirko Sagolj – “Genocide against Bosniaks in Srebrenica has not ended in July 1995… the genocide has been continued by using peaceful means… The essential problem of Srebrenica today is not only the fact that main culprits are at large… the question is how to revive the life and prevent new exodus? Only every 20th prewar dweller of Srebrenica has returned. More bones returned than people,” said Sogolj further nothing that even when they returned, returnees have no opportunities to earn for living. Author says that a large sums of money have been sent to Srebrenica for help “but ended somewhere between ruling SDA and people that were supposed to receive it.” Dnevni Avaz pg 3 ‘Admitting genocide’ op-ed by Husein Orahovac – Editorial on Srebrenica commemoration says “it took 10 years to hear from international officials that… genocide was committed against Bosniaks in Srebrenica.” Noting that Serb politicians have not dealt with Srebrenica issue, author says it is not the most important thing anymore how Serb politicians respond: “Something else is much more important. What will IC do after removing all doubts that genocide was committed in Srebrenica? Will it leave this organization of BiH, a result of genocide …, to survive or will it return attributes worth of every modern country?”

DL/VL op-eds on Srebrenica commemoration

Dnevni List pg 2 ‘Responsibility for crime’ by I. Glibusic – The author says that it is questionable whether Western politicians should have talked at all about the war crimes and war criminals at the Srebrenica commemoration since most of them allowed that the war on the territory of former Yugoslavia takes place. The author also claims that it is questionable to what extent the International Community wants to arrest Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic.

Vecernji List pg 2 ‘Anniversary of world disgrace’ by J. Pavkovic – Among the other things, the author criticizes the statement given by US Ambassador-at-large for War Crimes Issues Pierre-Richard Prosper in Srebrenica on Monday, who reminded that Croatia has an obligation to arrest ICTY fugitive Anto Gotovina. The author says that in this way the guilt of an aggressor and victim is being equalized and the real image, in which the International Community has a big stain, is becoming blurred. The author says that Srebrenica exactly is one of these stains and for this reason the Srebrenica anniversary was also the anniversary of the IC disgrace.

NN op-ed’s on Srebrenica

Nezavisne Novine op-ed pg 7 ‘Srebrenica – a day after’ by Zarko Korac – Condemning crimes committed in Srebrenica, the author notes that by reacting to 10th anniversary of Srebrenica crimes, Serbia has shown itself as a society that still must do much in confronting Milosevic’ political heritage. Nezavisne Novine op-ed pg 7 ‘Science is helping in exposing a myth’ by Catjerine Bobmerger – Writing for NN, the Head of ICMP Mission to BiH says that people, who were buried at Potocari, do not represent a means for accomplishment of political goals, but instead they are sons and fathers, who now have dignity and names. Holbrooke and Prosper: no agreement with Radovan Karadzic

Pink Mirela Cosic, Hayat, FTV, RTRS – Dayton Peace Agreement (DPA) s not perfect, but it stopped the war in BiH, said DPA Creator, current US Ambassador at UN Richard Holbrooke. “Was a perfect agreement possible? No. Even before we got together, the contact group decided that the country will be divided in 51-49 ratio. That’s where we got stuck: I did not believe that it is the right way, but it surely does not justify the ethnic cleansing”, stated Holbrooke after the commemoration in Potocari. Holbrooke again denied the information that United States promised Hague indictee Radovan Karadzic that they will not try to arrest him. US Ambassador for War Crimes Issues Pierre Richard Prosper confirmed Holbrooke’s statement: “The first time I’ve heard this is when I talked to Luka Karadzic. I told him that there is no such agreement, and that Radovan Karadzic must go to the Hague ”, said Prosper.

In spite of BiH COM’s decision on marking of Srebrenica crimes, RS Govt.  did not declare Mourning Day

RHB, Hayat, FTV, RTRS, Nezavisne Novine pg 5 ‘RS Government did not declare 11 July Mourning Day’ by S.Gojkovic – The Members of the RS Government claim that they did not receive any official decision about the Mourning Day from the BiH Council of Ministers, and that they heard about this initiative only through media. Bojan Zec Filipovic, Spokesperson of Adnan Terzic, says that the decision of BiH COM on Mourning Day was published in “BH Official Gazette” and hence BiH bodies are not obligated to inform entities about decisions. However, Cvijeta Kovacevic, Head of RS Government Press Bureau, says that “BH Official Gazette” dated 4 and 5 July (which was the last one delivered to RS Government) did not contain this decision. Glas Srpske pg 5 ‘A mouth full of pursuit’ by Z.Markovic – The author notes that as the marking of Serb suffering in Srebrenica and Bratunac approaches, various Bosniak and international officials strongly pledge for declaring Serb people as main culprit for BiH war , as well as to declare RS a genocidal creation. He disputes the day marked as beginning of war (6th April 1992), noting that on 4th March 1992, regular military units of Republic of Croatia entered BiH in Bosanski Brod. Inter alia, the author notes that Alija Izetbegovic was the one who removed his signature from Jose Cuttiliero’s plan in 1992, he reminds of Cutiliero’s statement that there would not have been war if Izetbegovic had not withdrawn his signature.

Patriot on Potocari explosive case

Patriot pgs 6-7 ‘World War IV – London as a frontline’ by Slobodan Vaskovic – Expressing horrification over London terrorist attacks, the author commends the strength of the Great Britain to deal with the problem of terrorism and to beat terrorists without a single bullet shot by not having fallen in chaos and panic. Unlike London , according to author, BiH has suffered a great defeat from terrorists who have planted the explosive at Potocari Centre. He is critical of the fact not a single local and international officials has qualified this as terrorist attempt, being specifically critical of the OHR press release and its wording (i.e. “negative publicity”). He notes that OHR has qualified this clear terrorist act into “an incident” and did everything to minimise planting of explosive. The author stresses it would have been the best for this state that everybody ahs condemned the terrorist act at Srebrenica and then launched investigation against those responsible for it. Instead, it did not happen, since word “terrorism” is one of key words which cannot be spoken out in BiH, since its recognition would equate with failure of IC’s policy.

Patriot links Madrid attack with origin of Potocari explosive

Patriot pgs 8-10 ‘Professionals planted explosive at Potocari’ by Mladen Stojanovic – Referring to well-informed law enforcement sources in BiH, the author notes that video-shots on explosive packages shows the professionals have planted it with possible intention to spread it out in small packages during Potocari commemoration. Report also brings a reference between Madrid terrorist attack and Potocari explosive, saying: “The investigation has identified the structure of the explosive found at Potocari. A part of structure reminds of the explosive used at Madrid attacks. Also, C4 explosive of American production was found at Potocari. Intelligence agencies link it with possible “hiding” of some of deliveries who used BiH as transit road..” according to Patriot sources, one Serb and one Bosniak were detained at Bratunac.
