Media Officer; Free Media Helpline – Media Development Department

PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION

 

Under the general supervision of the Head of Media Development and the direct supervision of the Media Development Research Officer, the Media Officer will implement existing programmes and initiate new ones which promote the protection of the freedom of expression and journalists’ rights and the development of independent and professional media in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Media Officer will be in particular responsible for working with Legal Advisor on follow-up on review of domestic media-related legislation, as well as follow-up to adoption and implementation of media-related Laws. Concurrently, the Media Officer will work with Project Specialist in running the Free Media Help Line, and carrying out the necessary follow-up to the reported cases. A further key function will be to work with Project Specialist in identifying, monitoring, translating and following up on country-wide journalists’ rights issues and other Media Development issues from media and other channels.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·        Together with Legal Advisor conduct follow-up to the adoption of Defamation Act and follow-up to the implementation of Freedom of Access to Information Act at all levels of authority in Bosnia and Herzegovina

·        Run the Free Media Help Line, where necessary and carry out necessary follow-up through conducting meetings throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, monitoring media-related trials and other tasks as required

·        Assist co-ordinating media Laws and Free Media Help Line response and findings internally, as well as with national and international organisations

·        In consultations with Media Development Research Officer, Legal Advisor and other Free Media Help Line staff, prepare and conduct the public relation campaign on media-related legislation, and co-ordinate the creation of web-page on media laws

·        Provide support to all other Media Development activities as required by the Head of Media Development

·        Review, monitor and translate relevant pieces from the country-wide media related to overall Media Development activities, and Media Laws in particular

·        Perform other duties as required

 

 

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS

·        Completed secondary education; minimum of two years university

·        Minimum 2 years work experience in a related field

·        Very thorough knowledge of BiH media and media laws

·        Good organisational, communication and public relations skills

·        Ability to work under pressure, and ability and willingness to work with people of different cultural, political and religious backgrounds while maintaining impartiality and objectivity

·        Fluency in the local language and excellent written and spoken English

·        Computer literate
