The formation of authorities in Central Bosnia Canton is welcome news and proof that the political leaders can reach agreement, High Representative Valentin Inzko said today. Now they must build on this momentum to finally agree to form a new Council of Ministers.

The High Representative was speaking during a meeting at the offices of the European Union Delegation with the President of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek.

“With no Council of Ministers and no budget, the state authorities are being prevented from carrying out their duties towards the people of the country. At the same time, the deadlock has jeopardized progress on the Euro-Atlantic reform agenda,” the High Representative said.

“Irresponsible rhetoric is no substitute for practical policies that will turn the economy around and make things better for citizens,” Inzko said. “Such rhetoric certainly won’t help the integration process.”

The High Representative said the reinforced EU presence in Bosnia and Herzegovina is a welcome boost for the integration process, and he stressed that the International Community remains fully committed to helping this country recover and prosper.

“The door to EU membership is still open,” he said, “but it will only be possible for the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina to go through that door if their political leaders work together and produce results.”

The High Representative thanked the President of the EU Parliament for the continued attention and support given to his office in the full implementation of the Dayton Agreement.
