High Representative Meets with Tihic and Covic

High Representative Valentin Inzko and Principle Deputy High Representative Roderick Moore in separate meetings today met the presidents of the SDA and HDZ BiH, Sulejman Tihic and Dragan Covic. Among other issues, their discussions touched upon the implementation of the BiH Constitutional Court’s decisions on the Mostar Statute and the recent agreement of the six political party leaders.

The High Representative called for intensified efforts by the parties to engage in constructive talks that would lead to the implementation of the BiH Constitutional Court’s decisions of 26 November 2010 and 18 January 2012 on elections to the Mostar City Council. For elections to proceed in Mostar along with the rest of the country, changes need to be in place by May when the local elections are due to be called.

Discussing the need for all relevant authorities to implement the decisions of the constitutional court, the High Representative also stressed that the Constitutional Court’s rulings do not threaten the position of any of the constituent peoples in Mostar, as the court has upheld all the safeguards contained in the Mostar City Statute for protection of Constituent peoples in Mostar. “Vital national interest, minimum and maximum quotas of constituent peoples in the Mostar City Council, specific decision-making mechanisms on key issues are not affected so no one should have anything to fear from implementation of the Court’s ruling” said High Representative Inzko.

“It is important that the leaders of political parties in Mostar work to find the political will to reach an agreement that will enable Mostar to continue to make progress,” said the High Representative today.
