All decent citizens stand in solidarity with the bereaved

People of goodwill throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina stand in solidarity with the thousands of family members who were bereaved by the genocide at Srebrenica, High Representative Valentin Inzko said today before participating at the ceremony to mark the 19th anniversary of the massacre.

“Across this country, in every community, citizens are remembering those who were killed in Srebrenica in July 1995. To show compassion for and solidarity with the bereaved is the normal response of decent people.”

“Here in Srebrenica on this solemn occasion, we are witnessing the burial of more victims whose remains have been identified,” the High Representative said. “Observing the right to a dignified burial is as old as civilisation – something that sets human beings apart from other creatures.”

“And as we remember the innocent victims of Srebrenica and all the innocent victims of the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina we have a duty to renew our commitment to the living, to renew our commitment to upholding the right of every BiH citizen to live and work in dignity, to live without fear, without material deprivation – clearly, these rights have not yet been fully secured.”

The High Representative called on BiH political and religious leaders to acknowledge the particular and appalling character of the genocide at Srebrenica and to recognise the continuing suffering of all those who were bereaved by the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
