The High Representative and EU Special Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Valentin Inzko, underlined today that the current series of high level visits to BiH show the EU’s increased commitment to BiH. Inzko was meeting representatives from the Visegrad Countries in Sarajevo today. Welcoming the visit of the Political Directors from Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, HR/EUSR Inzko noted that the EU is looking with concern at the current impasse in government formation in BiH.
HR/EUSR Inzko informed his interlocutors of the severe delay in forming the authorities at State and Federation level and the detrimental consequences this has for citizens of the entire country. “This is about democratic values and the rule of law”, HR/EUSR Inzko underlined. The delay in government formation is a serious set-back for BiH’s progress on the EU accession path. “EU Foreign Ministers warned of the negative consequences this could have when they met in Brussels on Monday”, HR/EUSR Inzko said.
“Political leaders need to engage in a constructive dialogue that will see Governments formed with no further delay”, HR/EUSR Inzko urged. “BiH needs authorities that focus on turning around the economy, fighting crime and corruption and making the country more functional. Further postponing these issues, risks delays on the Euro-Atlantic agenda” he said.
