Sarajevo

The 55th anniversary of the defeat of fascism was marked today. Participants in World War II visited the War Victims Monument in Vraca, near Sarajevo. Reported by Sanjin Beciragic.

Serbia

The Socialist Party and the Yugoslav Leftist Party celebrated the anniversary of the victory over fascism in the World War II. Opposition parties had announced a protest gathering at the same place. They cancelled it for security reasons. 10 journalists from independent media and several members of opposition parties were arrested. Reported by Danica Ilic from Belgrade.

Zagreb

A protest was organised at “Trg Velikana” in Zagreb, on the victory over fascism anniversary. The protestors demanded restitution of the old name of this square: “Trg zrtava fasizma”. Reported by Gordana Simonovic.

Russia

Victory over fascism was celebrated in Moscow as well. The Russian President, Vladimir Putin attended the parade. Reported by Zeljka Lekic.

Hans Jorg Kretschmer, the Head of the EU office in B&H addressed B&H citizens, on the occasion of the Day of Europe. “I hope that the citizens of this country will overcome ethnically motivated nationalism and work with determination towards integrating B&H into European structures”, Mr. Kretschmer said.

Robert Bicroft, the Special American Adviser for the Dayton Peace Agreement implementation met Zivko Radisic behind closed doors. Thomas Miller, the USA Ambassador in B&H also attended the meeting. As OBN reporter, Damir Kaletovic, unofficially found out, the themes of the conversation were the functioning of joint institutions and refugee return. The American officials concluded that Tihomir Gligoric was not the right person for the Council of Ministers Chairman.

Darko Savic reported on reactions of RS parties’ members to the B&H Parliament’s decision not to discuss the Presidency proposal for Tihomir Gligoric to be the Council of Ministers’ Chairman.

The International Community representatives in B&H know that the transitional period until the general elections is convenient for illegal enrichment. They warned that they would not tolerate such behaviour. The UNHCR is faced with a serious lack of money. They announced a new budget reduction. The financial police discovered some irregularities in the “Holiday Inn” Hotel privatisation. They demanded an explanation of the way in which the hotel had been sold. Further Prosecution procedures depend on the Federal Privatisation Agency decision. Reported by Amarildo Gutic.

The JNA members haven’t had the right of restitution of their flats since December 1995. The Defence Ministry representatives from both entities feel that different legal regulations present the main problem in this issue.

In today’s meeting, it was suggested that the military flats status should be equal in both entities. The report was produced by Mirna Sadikovic.

Prime ministers and internal ministers from both entities signed an agreement, according to which policemen from one entity will be able to be employed freely in the other. The Head of the UN mission in B&H, Jacques Klein also signed the agreement. Reported by Slobodan Maksimovic.

Duska Jurisic produced a report on the second day of the International Symposium on the Hague Tribunal in Opatija. The ICTY Chairman joined the Symposium today. He said that 4 trials are taking place in the Hague at the moment. He also welcomed the political changes in Croatia.

World

Evacuation of British citizens from Sierra Leone started today.

The EU political co-ordinator, Javier Solana said in Manila that the Philippine authorities can expect help from the EU in solving the hostage crisis.

The USA announced that they won’t support agricultural reform in Zimbabwe, unless this country’s Government stop the violence, said Strobe Talbot, the USA Deputy Secretary General.
