News Summary

IMC spokesperson on media during BiH pre-election campaign period

IMC spokesperson Zinaida Babovic explained IMC regulations on the work of electronic media during the pre-election campaign in BiH to a news briefing. In the pre-election period, radio and TV stations must follow IMC provisions on equal access in the media for all political parties. A program schedule of political party presentations should be sent to the IMC by 16 February. The IMC requests all media to ensure equal access of all political parties, coalitions and independent candidates. Following a request of the Steering Board of the Peace Implementation Council, paid political advertising has been banned.

International organizations hold press conference

On Tuesday in Sarajevo, OHR, OSCE, IMC and UN representatives held a press conference. The aforementioned organizations have prepared a program to protect the rights of journalist and freedom of information. In the process of drafting a law on media, the main focus will be on regulations concerning defamation and freedom of information. The Media Council will be the body charged with representing the ethical and professional standards of journalists and freedom of information. The OSCE and Council of Europe will organize a summit for the representatives BiH media this autumn. Also, the OHR and OSCE have set an initiative on the new law on media into motion. OSCE spokesperson Tanya Domi stated that local elections would take place in April. OHR spokesperson Alexandra Stiglmayer announced a meeting on educational issues that the OHR would be organizing. According to the OHR, the educational system in BiH does not work satisfactorily and has to be reformed. All the representatives of the International Community welcomed the election victory of Stjepan Mesic.
