News Summary
Political situation in Croatia
HDZ presidential candidate Mate Granic is visiting cities along the Adriatic Coast. News agency Tanjug reported that Granic confirmed for voters that an important part of his program is entry of Croatia into the EU and NATO. Granic wishes that Croatia would stop clinging to Dayton countries, with which Croatia should have good commercial relations, not customs unions. IDS, HSS, LS and HNS candidate Stipe Mesic promised voters cheaper state administration and economic and honest authority. Mesic condemned the HDZ for robbing the state and stated that members of the HDZ will be supplied a fair trial. Drazen Budisa also began his election campaign, during which he will visit approximately 100 cities. According to the results of election polls and according to those who know the political situation in Croatia, Mesic, Granic and Budisa have the most potential for becoming Croatian President. Mesic, Granic and Budisa support cooperation with the ICTY and the return of Serbs. However, according to the writings of Zagreb daily Jutarnji List, envoys of the Association of Serbs Exiled from Croatia Borislav Mikelic, Mihajlo Vucinic and Mile Dakic consider promises of undisturbed return of Serbs to be insincere. Mikelic, Vucinic and Dakic believe that the promises are a political marketing scheme. Conflicts within the HDZ intensify. Split’s Slobodna Dalmacija writes that the HDZ could be disintegrating because of conflicts between the two HDZ Vice-presidents, Vladimir Seks and Ivic Pasalic. Zagreb magazine National reports that a great number of documents and secret recorded conversations are ready for transport and destruction. A majority of media directors and editors-in-chief in Croatia have placed their positions at the disposal of parliament, but HRT Editor-in-Chief Obrad Kosovac says he will do no such thing for any Prime Minister, because no Prime Minister elected him to his position.
