IC pressure on Zepce, Zavidovici and Maglaj may decrease returns

IC pressure on Zepce, Zavidovici and Maglaj municipalities after failure to sign the Zepce agreement has brought the reaction of officials in the Maglaj Municipality, who attempted to explain what has been done to return minorities and offer several new initiatives for improving relations with other municipalities. Most Maglaj citizens are DPs, mostly from this same area. The Municipal Administration has been trying to resolve this problem for the past two years. However, all political factors agree to secure returns, but, due to unresolved political issues, the process is seriously jeopardized. Bosniak returns to the Novi Seher region have nearly restored the pre-war ratio, even allowing returns to Maglaj itself. However, the settlements of Rijecica and Krsno Polje had 29 buildings renewed for the return of minorities last year, which are still empty. Many small business projects are trying to secure economic means for return. Recent IC pressure may result in a decrease of returns. Municipality Head Ismet Mustajbasic said that Zavidovici and Maglaj are expected to one-sidedly accept the proposed agreement for Zepce, which is unconstitutional. “We propose the Zepce-Zavidovici-Maglaj triangle be left to the Bosniaks and Croats in the area, but if the neighboring municipality of Maglaj is able to help, we will gladly accept” said Mustajbasic. The IC can significantly assist returns by opening an office in the Zepce-Maglaj-Doboj region, since all problems and positive steps within the BiH Federation and both entities can be viewed in this region.
