News Summary

First day of Summit concludes

EU Chairman and Finnish President Marti Ahtisaari congratulated the BiH Government for its organization of the Stability Pact Summit. The first session was a review of the challenges, aims and demands of the Stability Pact. The entire region is going through a rough transition and the Pact is expected to secure stability. Pact Coordinator Bodo Hombach evaluated day one as very successful, regional cooperation being the key issue. The BiH Presidency members addressed Summit participants. BiH Presidency Chairman Ante Jelavic spoke first, expressing gratitude for holding the Summit in Sarajevo. He also spoke of security, stating that Yugoslavia, as an important regional stability factor, needs to be included in the Pact. BiH Presidency Member Alija Izetbegovic spoke of human rights, noting that the speeches of all three BiH Presidency members – Zivko Radisic spoke of economy – signify a united representation of the state. Turkey and Albania proposed special mention of Kosovo. The final session on Friday is anticipated with much optimism. “We are convinced that there can be no democratic development of Europe without democratization of its Southeast region” Radisic commented.

RTV BiH subscription fees to be distributed with electricity bills

RTV BiH and the power utility Elektroprivreda BiH signed a contract on Thursday on cooperation in collecting payment of TV subscriptions. Beginning in September, all electricity customers in seven BiH Federation cantons will receive invoices from Elektroprivreda with an additional fee of 6 KM for RTV BiH subscriptions. RTV BiH General Director Mirsad Purivatra stressed that this method is widely used in Europe and that some major public TV corporations, including the BBC, ARD and ORF are financed through subscriptions.
