News Summary

Petritsch and Barry attend session of OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna

High Representative Wolfgang Petritsch and Head of the OSCE Mission to BiH Robert Barry attended a meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna on Thursday. In his address, Petritsch emphasized the importance of the upcoming elections in BiH, which he expects will draw BiH closer to other European countries. “The development of a civil society, economy, the fight against corruption and refugee returns are the top priorities for BiH to progress as a state” Petritsch stressed. Petritsch welcomed the positive reflections of the election results in Croatia on the situation in BiH. Both Barry and Petritsch expressed their regret over the fact that obstructions by politicians and parliamentary delegates in BiH prevented the adoption of a permanent election law, which could be an obstacle for BiH admittance into the European Council.

Frequent attacks on Bosniaks living in Janja

Bosniak returnees in Janja are subject to frequent attacks. Several houses have been stoned and tensions escalated with the burning of Mustafa Mehmedic’s house and bombing of the house of Sead Gluhonic on Wednesday night. Local citizens view the recent attack of three Bosniaks from the BiH Federation on a Serb man as a possible motive for the latest violence. Local police increased the number of patrols in the area and the IPTF office in Bijeljina promised to intensify its activities to prevent future incidents.
