News Summary

SFOR performs action against illegal paramilitary formations in west Mostar

SFOR launched an operation against illegal paramilitary formations in west Mostar on Thursday in order to confiscate anything that could be used against the Dayton Peace Accord. According to the SFOR press release “with the goal to stop some devious activities” fully equipped SFOR troops held west Mostar under blockade for 6 hours. SFOR Multinational Division Southeast spokesperson Colonel Loraine Mott said that SFOR was looking for documents on “activities of illegal formations that have only “formally” ceased to exist several years ago.” Colonel Mott stressed that no one was harassed during the operation, but SFOR was only performing its duty as guaranteed by the Dayton Agreement.

Croat Ministers walk of BiH Federation session

The BiH Federation Government held its regular session in Sarajevo on Thursday with next year’s budget as the only item on the agenda. All Croat Ministers in the Government walked out of the session at the beginning and departed for Mostar to participate at an impromptu meeting of Croat officials in BiH over the situation in west Mostar. The rest of the Government discussed budget distribution of 950 million KM, but it seems that all ministries were dissatisfied with the amount that was slated for their offices. Prime Minister Edhem Bicakcic called the absence of HDZ BiH ministers unnecessary because the SFOR action in Mostar was announced, transparent and in the course of regular SFOR activities.

Srebrenica Mayor and Deputy Mayor meet for first time after attack on Munib Hasanovic

US Ambassador to BiH Thomas Miller visited Srebrenica on Thursday and mediated in the first meeting of the Srebrenica Mayor and Deputy Mayor following the attack on Srebrenica Municipal Council Secretary Munib Hasanovic. Ambassador Miller asserted that Srebrenica has a special meaning for the US Government as a symbol of what happens if things are not done in time. Ambassador Miller cited establishment of a multiethnic administration as the reason for his visit to Srebrenica, adding that the attack on Hasanovic was part of activities to prevent the creation of multiethnic institutions in BiH. During the meeting, several hundred citizens gathered in front of the Srebrenica Municipality building in religious procession, supposedly marking the Patron Saint Day of Srebrenica Municipality.

Association ‘Brcko for Brcko Citizens’ demand Farrand resignation

The Tuzla branch of the “Brcko for Brcko Citizens” Association demanded the resignation of Brcko Supervisor Robert Farrand due to poor results in realization of two-way returns in Brcko. Speaking at a press conference in Tuzla, Association representatives explained that Farrand failed to implement two-way returns, even within Brcko District where he has full authorization to do so. It was also Farrand’s fault that he did not proclaim Brcko a BiH district seven months after the final arbitration decision. The Association appealed to the BiH Presidency and Council of Ministers to hold one of their next sessions in Brcko in order to “move implementation of the arbitration decision from the point of zero.”
