Izetbegovic on Silajdzic-proposed revision of Dayton Agreement
Bosniak Member of the BiH Presidency Alija Izetbegovic stated that he concurred with revisions to the Dayton Agreement as proposed by Co-chairman of the BiH Council of Ministers Haris Silajdzic. Izetbegovic is also of the opinion that Dayton should be revised. “That is increasingly obvious every day” he said. Izetbegovic is sorry that Silajdzic did not give any details on how he would fulfill that goal. Izetbegovic pointed out that, at this moment, he could not see forces that were ready to take such a step in or out of BiH. Izetbegovic hopes that, some day, relevant factors would make the needed changes to the Dayton Peace Agreement. Until then, all positive provisions in the Dayton Agreement should be implemented. Commenting on the influence Croatian election results would have on BiH, Izetbegovic said he had a new formula: “a weak Serbia in the east and democratic Croatia in the west. Now we have both. This is a historic chance for BiH.” He added that a “priority in his work in the BiH Presidency would be bettering relations between Croatia and BiH. Only the internal development of BiH can make it stronger, but the neighborhood is important also.” Izetbegovic considers that, after events in Kosovo and NATO actions, Serbia is much weaker than he had expected. He also assessed that quick and deep-rooted changes have occurred in Croatia. Commenting on the possible results of the upcoming local elections in BiH, Izetbegovic stated that nationalism exists in both the Croat and Serb nations. “Only the SDA can protect the interests of Bosniak people. Others are indifferent to these interests” he concluded.
