Impermissible situation concerning the garbage disposal in Mostar Municipalities with the Croat Majority

OHR (S) is deeply concerned over the situation with the garbage disposal in the Mostar municipalities with Croat majority. It is very irresponsible to allow garbage to accumulate on the streets of Mostar; this situation is a serious health risk, a source of disease and an ecological disgrace. Even more concerning is that this seems to be a traditional occurrence in these municipalities during the summer.

Besides the company in direct charge of the garbage collection (Parkovi Public Company), the OHR considers municipalities responsible for the provision of basic communal services. Garbage collection is one of the essential services for the citizens of any community and should be one of the first priorities. If municipalities are not able to do it, there is a provision in the Interim Statute which enables City to take over these responsibilities.

The OHR would like to remind the authorities and citizens of the waste dump Uborak, which was built by the European Union Administration of Mostar. This project was implemented to provide for garbage disposal for the whole city for the next 10-20 years. Ther the next 10-20 years. The fact that five years after its completion an agreement on the use of this very modern waste facility has not been achieved illustrates the wholesale negligence of the local authority leadership. It clearly shows that they show little interest in the well-being of the citizens, and of the City.
