News Summary

Srebrenica Municipal Council holds inaugural session

Srebrenica Municipality has received a multiethnic authority. Bosniak and Serb delegates held the inaugural session of the Srebrenica Municipal Assembly. Head of the OSCE Mission to BiH Ambassador Robert Barry made an introductory speech at the formative session. The RS Anthem ‘Boze Pravde’ was played without the presence of CD Coalition delegates. BiH Federation Parliament President Halid Genjac, RS National Assembly delegates from the RS, SFOR and representatives of international organizations participated in the session. Barry thanked the organizers of the session and stated, “if reconciliation can be possible in Srebrenica then it can be possible anywhere else in BiH.” He asserted that the new multiethnic authority in Srebrenica should be focused on two-way refugee return, renewal of the infrastructure and employment issues. “If your work is successful, the international community will secure you material support” Barry concluded. CD Coalition delegate Nesib Mandzic was elected Srebrenica Municipal Assembly President and Drazen Mirkic was nominated as his deputy.

Sarajevo Court states reasons for arrest of SRT cameraman

After the RS Journalist’s Association called the BiH Federation police action to arrest Rade Popovic as “a highway abduction that jeopardizes freedom of movement and the Dayton Agreement” the Sarajevo Court explained the reasons for his arrest. According to Sarajevo Judge Jasminka Kosovic, Rade Popovic, now an SRT cameraman, was arrested because he was accused of fraud. He was working for Sarajevo TV as a driver of a Lada Niva car, which he took to Pale in 1992. Since he was not available to the court at that time, he was tried in absence and in April 1996 sentenced to seven months imprisonment. After he was arrested on Sunday, Popovic submitted a request for a retrial, which was approved. He was released on Monday and stated that he was treated correctly. His retrial is scheduled for 14 June.

BOSS on Tuzla RTV

Bosnian Party (BOSS) President Mirnes Ajanovic accused Tuzla Mayor Selim Beslagic of putting pressure on freedom of the media, which is especially evident, according to Ajanovic, regarding Radio Tuzla. He also stated that TV Tuzla, although it is a Shareholder Company, is embraced by Beslagic and the Tuzla authorities. Ajanovic explained that editorial policy is being dictated from these offices.
