Izetbegovic sends official request for corruption examination
BiH Presidency Member Alija Izetbegovic officially requested an international investigation into corruption. Izetbegovic’s advisor Ademir Jerkovic stated at a press conference that, in a letter sent to a number of heads of states Izetbegovic wrote that The New York Times edition dated 17 August 1999 contained Chris Hedges’ article on alleged abuse of international aid and BiH public funds. The letter reads, “after we denied The New York Times allegations, the newspaper published a correction, which was followed with a denial from some foreign and domestic institutions. Although The New York Times allegations have been sufficiently discredited, the newspaper has not withdrawn its accusations, but made only a partial correction. Statements of denial from some international institutions were not so clear and left readers and listeners in doubt about what is true and what is not. The reason for this is that, besides “domestic sources” some members of international organizations and embassies were involved in the spreading of false information, unfortunately. Izetbegovic informed the heads of countries and governments that, “we will say more on possible motives of the article’s author and his sources for this incredible attack on a country’s reputation and its leadership in charges we are preparing against The New York Times and Chris Hedges”. Izetbegovic decided to request an international investigation because this situation caused serious moral damage to BiH, and is still causing such damage.

New US Ambassador holds press conference
Newly appointed US Ambassador to BiH Thomas J. Miller stated during his first meeting with journalists that his job in BiH is to ensure the security of all BiH peoples, launch the economy and establish a political system in which human rights will be respected. According to Miller, all of this should be accomplished with the International Community. He stated that more refugees must be returned and a healthy economy should be established, adding that fighting corruption is on the top of his agenda. Speaking about a meeting with US President Bill Clinton, he stated that Clinton is very optimistic regarding the future of BiH, because during his meeting with the BiH Presidency at the Stability Pact Summit he notice a spirit of cooperation, which did not exist two years ago. The new Ambassador promised journalists that he will not lie to them, saying, “I will always give one of three possible answers. Either I will know the answer to a question raised and be able to answer, will not answer for reasons of confidentiality or I will not know the answer.”.
