The B&H Parliament confirmed the appointment of Spasoje Tusevljak as the new Chairman of the Council of Ministers. National parties: the SDA, the SDS and the HDZ voted for Mr. Tusevljak. “Mr. Tusevljak should be given a chance, because he is an independent candidate. He was not in B&H during the war, and he couldn’t have committed any war crimes”, said Edhem Bicakcic, the Prime Minister of the Federation of B&H. Opposition parties voted against Tusevljak. “The High Representative is disappointed by this appointment, because the criteria were not transparent”, said Alexandra Stieglmayer, the OHR Spokesperson.

“There are many people with good reputation who know the situation here.

I think that your Government could have appointed a much stronger candidate”, said the US Ambassador in B&H, Thomas Miller.

The Chairman of the B&H Presidency, Alija Izetbegovic announced his resignation in October. The main reason for the decision is his health.

The State border Service took control over the Sarajevo airport today. “Establishment of the service is an important step in fight against corruption”, said Alija Izetbegovic, the Chairman of the B&H Presidency. “Without the Border Service, Bosnia would be a transitory point for illegal entrance to Europe”, Mr. Jacques Paul Klein, the Head of the UN Mission in B&H said. “SFOR intends to leave the airport before September”, said Mike Chandler, the UN Project Co-ordinator. The German Government granted DM45,2 million for improvement of B&H economy. Significant part of the money will be used in co-operation with entity authorities, Slobodan Maksimovic confirmed.

The US Government granted $67,2million for the return of minorities in B&H. Ambassador Miller said that Prijedor, Foca and Pale, refuges of war criminals cannot expect the American aid in infrastructure. The report was produced by Sanjin Beciragic.

At today’s session, the B&H House of Representatives appointed Fuad Puricevic as the new Federal Minister for war invalids. Marko Arapovic was appointed as his deputy. The Parliament appointed 4 more deputy ministers. OBN reporter, Adis Saranovic produced the report.

Banja Luka

The RS Government supported the programme of social protection. Therefore, the RS Union of metalworkers decided that they would not organise the announced strike. Representatives of ministries and unions decided that they would meet more often, in order to solve all problems of the RS Union. Reported by Suzana Vukcevic.

Gorazde

Employees of the factory “Pobjeda” from Gorazde protested today, demanding their salaries, which they hadn’t received since January. The Canton Authorities refused to talk to the employees. Reported by Amarildo Gutic.

10 people were injured in a bomb attack in the city of Gracanica in Kosovo. International forces blocked all roads to Gracanica.

2 people died and 30 were injured in an earthquake in Turkey.

Rescue services are still looking for victims of yesterday’s earthquake in the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

The Russian President, Vladimir Putin suggested construction of a joint rocket system of NATO, EU and Russia. During his visit to Italy, Putin met the Italian Prime Minister and the Pope John Paul II.

The US Secretary General, Madeline Albright said that the Palestinian leader, Jaser Arafat agreed to meet the US President in Washington next week. The OHR and OSCE appealed on Rajko Vasic, the RS Minister of Information to withdraw his invitation to the public prosecutor to overtake legal measures against the Agency BETA, SRNA and the RTRS for spreading the false information. The Tax Administration carried out tax control in offices of the daily newspaper “Dnevni Avaz”. The editor in chief of “Dnevni Avaz”, Mensur Osmovic said that the action was a brutal attack, which stopped printing of the newspaper. Reported by Anes Alic.

The Head of the OSCE Mission, Robert Barry condemned the action of the Tax Administration in “Dnevni Avaz”.
