Yugoslavia
As it announced earlier, NATO has used good weather conditions and intensified its air strikes on Yugoslavia. Although the severest strikes were made during this week, NATO announced that they intend to intensify them further. A brake was made only during the visit of the Special Russian Envoy for the Balkans, Victor Chernomyrdin, who did not want to give any details about his meeting with Milosevic yesterday. Upon his arrival to Moscow, he said that the visit was satisfactory.
Kosovo – refugees
New refugees are arriving to Albania and evacuation of refugees from Kukes to the South of the country continues.
World – reactions
West expresses skepticism regarding Milosevic’s accepting of the G8 Plan. The UK asks for a real proof from the Yugoslav President that he is ready to accept their proposal for solving the Kosovo crisis.
Bonn
A meeting of thirty countries, including all the Balkans’ countries except Yugoslavia, ended yesterday in Bonn. The participants of the meeting were preparing a document about stability in the South East Europe. Germany made a draft, which includes developing of plan for economic support to the Balkans’ countries. From 1991 to 1998, the West provided DEM 150 billion for the Balkans’ areas of crisis.
Butmir (Sarajevo)
The Butmir 2000 project is a proof that international troops will stay for a long time in BiH in order to preserve peace. In this Sarajevo residential quarter, building of flats for 2,000 SFOR members is currently going on. The funds for the project are $25 million.
Banja Luka
The reconstruction of the RS police should be finished by June 30th, 2000. Until that date, 25% Bosniak and Croat should start working for the Interior Ministry of the entity.
Sarajevo
The Ministry of Justice has informed the BiH Federation Government that prisons in the Federation are in a very difficult position because they lack funds. Although this is not an excuse for escape of prisoners, demands are justified.
World
A piece on the current situation in Kashmir was followed by a report on fire in an Austrian tunnel where 37 people were wounded and one killed. This was followed by a report on an agreement between Germany and France to accept the European pact on employment. New government crisis in Russia and election of a civil leadership in Nigeria after many years of dictatorship followed.
Electricity (Brcko & Sarajevo)
In Brcko, reconstruction of the electricity supplying system, damaged during the war, is going on. This was followed by a report on unauthorised use of electricity in the Sarajevo Canton. During last five months, more than 5,5 million of kW have been lost because of unpaid bills.
Sarajevo
The director, Jasmin Dizdar, currently living in the UK, winner of a prize on the Cannes Festival, exclusively in TV Info, talked about his work and the awarded film.
A report on the finals of the CIVITAS competition in knowledge of democracy in the BiH Federation. The project has been implemented in the BiH since 1996 by the USA Government. Some 10,000 teachers and 8,000 elementary and secondary schools’ pupils have finished the training to date.
