Brcko Region Receives Over 12 Million DM in International Aid From the EC

It was announced today the Brcko region will be receiving over 12 million DM in international aid from the European Commission. It is part of a 126 million DM commitment from the European Commission awarded in 17 contracts to non-government organizations to facilitate the returns of refugees and displaced persons to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Brcko Office of the High Representative Acting Supervisor Ian McLeod was joined by community representatives and Rachel Peterson of Mercy Corps Europe/Scottish European Aid, the implementing non-government organization awarded the Brcko contract, to make the announcement at the OHR media centre.

Brcko’s funding award represents approximately one-tenth of the money offered by the European Commission to Bosnia for European Union-funded projects that will facilitate the return of refugees and displaced persons to Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1998.

The projects selected for Brcko include repair of the Rijeka electrical sub-station, repair of approximately 300 houses in a Croat return area (to include the water supply to those houses), the primary school at Ulice and repair of the ambulanta at Ulice.

The projects will provide hundreds of local job opportunities in manufacturing and construction sectors.
