Prijedor

The Federation President, Ejup Ganic visited Prijedor for the first time. He also met Serb returnees in Sanski Most, as well as Bosniacs who returned to their homes in Stari Grad, Kozarac, Trnopolje and Hambarine. Reported by Milena Letic-Joves.

Sarajevo

According to the Association of Refugees, more than 28 000 refugee families live in tents at the moment. They live in a very difficult conditions. If they do not receive aid before winter, their fate will be very uncertain. Reported by Sevko Bajic.

Brcko

A project of building of additional storeys started in the Brcko District recently. 162 flats are currently being constructed. Only Serbs were privileged to get flats under favourable conditions so far. The Transitory Assembly in the District decided to stop the process until certain law regulations are passed. Slobodanka Radojkovic produced the report.

World

G8 leaders warned that the International Community must not recognise results of any elections in FRY, after the recent Constitutional changes in this country. The Russian President, Vladimir Putin said that he was ready to contribute joint efforts in preventing violence between Serbia and Montenegro. G8 leaders are worried because of unstable fuel prices. They also discussed other current world problems.

There was no progress in the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations in Camp David.

FBI agents arrested 18 people, under suspicion of gathering money for the guerrilla in Lebanon. Mladen Maric produced the piece on current world events.

Sarajevo

The Chairman of the B&H Presidency, Alija Izetbegovic announced his withdrawal on 12th October. A law regulating the issue of replacement of Presidency members has not been adopted yet in B&H. The B&H Parliament should discuss proposals for solving this issue in their first session in September. The report was produced by Damir Kaletovic.

Sarajevo

NATO delegation visited B&H last week. Vedran Persic interviewed the delegation leader, Peter Zumklai. “Priority of the International Community is construction of civil institutions here. The army issue is not so important at the moment”, Mr. Zumklai said.

Banja Luka

The RS Defence Minister, Manojlo Milovanovic rejected the idea of formation of a joint B&H Army. According to him, the existence of two armies is not an obstacle for B&H membership of the Council of Europe. Mr. Milovanovic feels that it is necessary to provide loans for officers in the RS Army, in order to enable them to construct flats for themselves.

Glamoc

HVO carried out a military exercise in Glamoc. This was the first time since cancellation of the programme “Equip and Train” for the Croat part of the B&H Army.

Banja Luka

The 3rd International Summer Festival will be opened this evening in Banja Luka. The Festival will last 7 days, and 11 countries will participate in it. The Festival programme will be performed at the famous fortress “Kastel” in Banja Luka.

Sport

Reports on international tennis and the Tour de France were presented.

Sarajevo

An American businessman and the former FRY Prime Minister, Milan Panic arrived in B&H today. He is a representative of opposition to Milosevic’s regime. Mr. Panic met the Chairman of the B&H Presidency, Alija Izetbegovic and the Federation Prime Minister, Edhem Bicakcic. They discussed future economic co-operation between countries in the Balkans. Banja Luka

Mr. Panic also visited Banja Luka, where he met the RS Prime Minister, Milorad Dodik. Reported by Milorad Milojevic.

Belgrade

The Serbian police arrested 836 members in this year. “Otpor” was founded in 1998 by students of the Belgrade University. Danica Ilic reported on frequent arrests of members of the anti-regime organisation “Otpor”.

Brcko

There were numerous incidents in this area in the last four years. Serb refugees refuse to go back to their homes in the Federation. The Municipality gave them permission for construction of houses in Klanac, so that they could move out from Bosniac houses, and enable Bosniac refugees to return. Amarildo Gutic produced a piece on refugee return in Klanac, near Brcko.

Brcko

The Brcko District Assembly should decide on law proposals for functioning of the District by 4th August. The elementary school “Duro Pucar Stari” should be the first school with a joint programme in the area. A proposal of Law on education is currently being prepared. Reported by Slobodanka Radojkovic.

Collection of tax decreased by DM 20 million in the Federation of B&H in the last 6 months. The Federation Government prepared measures for quick discovering and sanctioning of tax evasion. Salesmen suppose that market-places like “Arizona” will close after price increase due to tax. The report was produced by Mirna Sadikovic.

Sarajevo

Although this year was marked as the year of return, the situation in the country is different. Refugees would like to return to their homes, but the political environment is not appropriate at the moment. Damir Kaletovic produced a piece on refugee return in B&H.

World

Whether the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations in Camp David would fail or not will be known a few hours after the return of the US President, Bill Clinton to Camp David. The Pope, John Paul II suggested an international administration for Jerusalem.

G8 issued a joint declaration, demanding among other things that rich countries start new initiatives in fight against AIDS, and to make computer technology more accessible. The piece on world events was produced by Adis Saranovic.

Egypt

A piece on history of Egypt, the country which celebrated 48th anniversary of its existence today was produced by OBN journalist Mladen Maric.

Sarajevo

On the occasion of the Egyptian National Holiday, OBN reporter Vedran Persic interviewed the Egyptian Ambassador in B&H, Salah El-Ashri. “At the moment, we are working on a project of export of sheep from B&H to Egypt at the time of Muslim religious holidays. This could be a long-term business”, Mr. El-Ashri said.

Sarajevo

The B&H Ministry of Health, the Internal Ministry and the Institution for alcoholism signed a contract on establishment of Department for drug addiction in the Sarajevo Canton. There are plans for opening such departments in other cantons as well. Reported by Anes Alic.

Rakovica

The Dutch Ambassador, Frederick Rake placed a foundation stone for construction of a children centre for therapy and recreation. The construction should be completed in 2 years. Meliha Hasanbegovic produced the report.
