High Representative meets Council of Europe delegation

Sarajevo, 30 June 1999

Carlos Westendorp, the High Representative, met on Wednesday 30 June with a delegation of the Council of Europe in Sarajevo, in order to discuss Bosnia Hercegovina's application for membership of that organisation. The High Representative firmly believes that BiH's future lies within the European family of nations, and for that reason has always been highly supportive of BiH's application.

While acknowledging BiH's continued shortcomings in the fulfillment of the criteria necessary for membership, the High Representative repeated a view he has often expressed in the past: that BiH should be allowed to accede to the CoE on the basis both of a list of fundamental conditions, which the country is able and should be ready to comply with, and a supplementary set of goals that should be met in the near future. CoE membership would underline the International Community's confidence in BiH's continued dedication to the principles of the Dayton Peace Agreement.
