The High Representative is pleased to announce that the registration
process and issuance of the new license plates will begin on 2 February
1998.
The Parties, the Council of Ministers of BiH, and the Governments of
both Entities, have signed the Memorandum of Understanding and by doing
so have met the deadline set by the PIC at the Bonn conference. The
signing of the Memorandum of Understanding will allow the immediate
implementation of Annex I (Regulation on Motor Vehicle and License
Plates) and Annex II (Instructions on the Implementation of the
Regulation on Motor Vehicle Registration and License Plates).
The new license plates will not identify vehicles by district of
origin. Every vehicle in BiH will have a license plate in the same
format. Numbers will be issued at random by computer and held centrally.
This is another successful step towards a return to normality in BiH.
With these new plates, freedom of movement will become easier and safer,
helping to increase peoples confidence in the peace process and allowing
them to turn their backs on the politics of nationalism and hatred.
The presentation of the new license plate will take place on Monday, 2
February 1998, at 12.00 p.m. in various places across BiH. Press events
have been set up for Sarajevo, in front of the Sarajevo Canton Ministry
of Interior and for Banja Luka, outside the Presidential Palace. In
addition, press opportunities will be available in Bijeljina, at the RS
MUP HQ and in Travnik, at the Central Bosnia Cantonal Ministry of
Interior.
