In honor of the first anniversary of the Brcko District, the Ambassadors of the Steering Board of the Peace Implementation Council (PIC) held their weekly meeting with the High Representative, Wolfgang Petritsch, in Brcko, on 8 March before attending the official District Anniversary ceremonies.
Ambassador Gary Matthews, Supervisor for the District, presented a report on the significant advances the Brcko District has made in its first year in the areas of refugee return, the activities of the multi-ethnic government, law enforcement, legal and judicial reform, establishment of a viable budget, regulation of the Arizona Market, and on initial steps in privatization and educational integration. The Ambassadors discussed the District’s plans for economic revitalization, its multi-faceted strategy for educational integration, intensified refugee, infrastructure needs, and regional cooperation with the Entities and neighboring countries. They also discussed the need to secure international financial assistance by identifying loan or funding sources to carry out these programs. In a separate meeting, the Ambassadors met with Federation President Filipovic and Federation Vice President Halilovic and the Brcko Assembly President Mirsad Djapo, Brcko Mayor Sinisa Kisic and Deputy Mayor Ivan Krndelj to discuss District/Entity relations on various issues. (RS Prime Minister Ivanic was delayed and unable to participate, but had expressed his support for the District yesterday in meetings with District officials here.) All participants were impressed with the accomplishments the District had achieved in its first year of existence and expressed continued interest in supporting future District efforts to solidify its multi-ethnicity and economic development.
