GRADUAL PROGRESS IN PROPERTY LAW IMPLEMENTATION; FAILURE TO FILE CLAIMS MAY AFFECT RIGHT TO ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION

Sarajevo, 23 January 2001

During the month of November, the rate of implementation of property laws in BiH rose from 19% to 20%. In the Federation, the rate has increased to 27% from 25%, and from 11% to 12% in the Republika Srpska. The rate in Brcko has dropped to 14% due to the removal of repossessions of destroyed properties from the statistics.

The agencies involved with the implementation of property laws would like to make two points this time. First, we would like to remind local authorities of their responsibility to make accurate implementation figures available to the international community on a timely basis. Refusal to do so results in outdated figures that may be viewed negatively in assessing municipalities for the provision of international assistance. It may also result in non-compliance reports being issued against the relevant authorities.

Secondly, we encourage displaced persons who have not filed claims for repossession of private property to file a claim with the relevant housing body immediately, as failure to file a claim may inhibit the right to alternative accommodation.
