High Representative discusses war crimes issues with ICTY Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte

Sarajevo, 03 October 2000

The High Representative, Wolfgang Petritsch, met Carla Del Ponte, chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), in Sarajevo today. Their discussions centred on the political situation in the region, the upcoming elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the 38 publicly indicted war criminals who remain at large.

The High Representative will meet the president of the court, Judge Claude Jorda, and Registrar Dorothee de Sampayo Garrido-Nijgh in The Hague tomorrow, Wednesday, where he will bring himself up to date with the work of ICTY.

The High Representative supports fully the work of ICTY and underlined today that all indicted war criminals must give themselves up to the court. Those responsible for the terrible war crimes committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina must face justice, to lay to rest the country's tragic recent past and enable its citizens to look with confidence to the future.
