High Representative welcomes agreement on BiH airspace

Sarajevo, 13 January 2000

The High Representative, Wolfgang Petritsch, warmly welcomes the agreements reached over the last few days on control of the upper airspace of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which will be released for civil use on 27 January 2000.

The High Representative congratulates the three Directors General of the BiH Department of Civil Aviation for reaching agreements with neighboring countries to provide the necessary Air Traffic Control service.

The agreements will result in substantial revenue for Bosnia and Herzegovina, which will enable this country to start build its own aviation infrastructure.

This important step towards normalizing the country's airspace brings Bosnia and Herzegovina closer to Europe and the rest of the world, and will be of benefit to all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Directors General worked closely with international civil aviation organisations such as EUROCONTROL and ICAO, as well as with SFOR and OHR, to reach these agreements.

It is an excellent example of how co-operation within a State organization can bring about tangible benefits to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
