The Truth Must be Reaffirmed for Moral Balance in Society
“Every human being has the right to be buried in a manner that respects their immortal soul and in a manner that allows their loved ones to grieve,” the High Representative said today.
The High Representative attended the burial at Potocari of 520 more victims of the 1995 massacre, part of the solemn ceremony to remember the more than 8,000 men and boys who were victims of genocide.
“The people of Europe stand in solidarity with those who mourn the loss of loved ones at Srebrenica,” High Representative Valentin Inzko said. He added that 11 July, European Remembrance Day, is a day on which truth must be reaffirmed as the only way of restoring the moral balance in society.
“Only on the basis of truth can a divided society begin to heal wounds and move forward,” the High Representative said.
Yesterday, the High Representative walked part of the way with thousands of participants in the Srebrenica Peace March. Today he reiterated his conviction that good is not passive and society is not helpless in the face of evil.
“Society can actively and decisively advance an alternative to evil, an antidote to evil – a reality and life built on justice,” he said.
The High Representative said Bosnia and Herzegovina can recover and move forward through the steady pursuit of justice and the systematic and empirical documentation of what happened at Srebrenica and elsewhere during the conflict.
“Truth will prevail – even among those who stubbornly hide from it,” he said. “Justice has been slow, but justice will come.”
