News Summary
Elections in BiH
Of 350,000 voters registered in BiH for the Croatian parliamentary elections, 112, 000 voted. At the three polling stations in the RS, in Banja Luka, Prijedor and Brcko, 1,770 people voted. President of the Association of Serb Refugees from Croatia Petra Dzodan stated that voting in the RS was not free and democratic. He explained this by pointing out the small number of polling stations and the fact that they had no chance to see the election lists and find the Association on them. OSCE spokesperson Pierce McCorley stated that the OSCE coordinated the work through its international supervisors, but did not organize the elections. Croatian citizens living in Yugoslavia voted in Belgrade, Subotica and Kotor.

OSCE holds press conference
Head of the Banja Luka OSCE Pierce McCorley stated at a press conference in Banja Luka that there are 25,000 candidates on the lists for the BiH municipal elections in 2000. 4,000 of them do not answer to the PEC regulations. According to the PEC, a person cannot run in the elections if he/she illegally occupies a flat or house owned by a refugee or displaced person. “When the OSCE reviews the lists, political parties will be able to replace the disputed candidates” he stated. SFOR spokesperson Lucy Diles stated that the demilitarization of Brcko is going according to plan and that 15% of the RS Army forces should have been withdrawn from Brcko by 1 January.
