News Summary

Clinton message to Jelavic regarding Summit

US President Bill Clinton addressed BiH Presidency Chairmen Ante Jelavic, stating that the Stability Pact Summit is an opportunity to improve the future of Southeast Europe on the basis of democracy and co-operation and not nationalism and nationalistic conflicts. “I would like to encourage you to begin working on issues of market reform, democratization and regional security. I hope your government will give a good presentation of itself at the Summit, for I have been advocating, along with the EU and others, your integration into the global market system, and we applaud your efforts to create an attractive environment for foreign investments. It will be very important for the Summit to show the isolation of Serbia under Milosevic’s rule. I hope the Summit will make the progress achieved in implementation of the Dayton Agreement transparent. I am anxious to hear your latest decisions on strengthening the Permanent Military Committee and decreasing military expenditure” read the letter.

We owe victims the truth – ICTY Prosecutor at Blaskic trial

“Blaskic flourished through crimes and did not just participate in them” the ICTY prosecution stated regarding crimes against Bosniaks in Central Bosnia committed by the HVO in 1993 under Blaskic’s command. “Blaskic has foregone every opportunity to punish the perpetrators, for he himself was involved in the plan to eradicate and banish Bosniaks from Central Bosnia. He was well rewarded for his good work that left death and destruction in its path.” The prosecutor completed his closing statements with a quote from Voltaire. “We owe respect to the living and truth to the dead.” The prosecutor kept trying to prove that these crimes were conducted under the political auspices of Zagreb, Blaskic being the executive tool. “The April 1993 attack on Ahmici and other villages in the Lasva Valley was planned and executed as part of the implementation of such policies.” The fact that Croatia had general control over the HVO and their army participated in actions in Central Bosnia were also presented, which gave the conflict international significance, which means that its victims are protected by the Geneva Convention. Blaskic’s defense is now presenting their closing statements.
