OHR BiH TV News Summary, 18 October 1998

Pristina – A technical team tasked to make preparations for the two thousand OSCE Verification Mission members has arrived in Kosovo. U2 intelligence aircraft started monitoring the Kosovo region yesterday. Still, the newest incidents worsened the steps forward in the Kosovo negotiations: three policemen were killed and five wounded. NATO Commander for Europe, Wesley Clark, will visit Belgrade again tomorrow in order to confirm that air-strike threats are not just empty words.

Prijedor – 376 Bosniaks and Croats were exhumed in the last 2 months in the Prijedor municipality. The Expert team discovered and exhumed 18 mass and 50 individual graves. Exhumations are continuing in Bosanski Novi where so far two graves were discovered with five victims. The Expert Team will work on the exhumations here also in the next week.

Klisa – The first group of 10 people will go to Klisa tomorrow to start reconstruction of their devastated houses. So began the gradual return of Klisa residents, who have waited in tents to go home since July. After 80 days of negotiations they are allowed to go in groups of ten every day. The International Community has ensured help for housing reconstruction as well as the repair of waterworks and electricity.

Mostar – The return of Croat citizens to Mostar still cannot be confirmed. Except for the signatures of the Croatian officials on the agreements, there are no other steps forward on this issue. The Croatian returnees demand that their homes be reconstructed before their return. Footage showed Sir Martin the former OHR Regional Office Chief explaining the problem at a presser. On the other hand larger returns of Bosniaks and Serbs to this region has been noticed.

Among the international news a new scandal surrounding the Croat President Franjo Tudjman was interesting. Media assessed to have a copy of Mrs. Tudjman’s deposit of 210,000 DEM with Zagrebacka Bank. At the same time everybody knows that Tudjman did not register this property of his wife when he, like all other politicians, filled in a special property form before the elections. Zagrebacka Bank did not deny the press reports, but offered 300,000 DEM to the person who gives information who gave the information transfer to the Media.

Gorazde – The first Water Supply Project funded by the French Government was not sufficient to ensure drinking water for Gorazde. The second project funded by The Saudi Development Fund which covers the larger part of the works, has been finished. Until now the Gorazde residents either brought their drinking water from the well or bought it from a shop.

Norway – A large humanitarian action with more then half million participants was organised in Norway today. It is presumed that this action sponsored by the Norwegian King, will gather around 300 million Crowns. A part of it will be directed to the reconstruction of BiH.
