Ambassador Holbrooke meets with BiH Presidency members

New US Ambassador to the UN Richard Holbrooke visited Sarajevo on Wednesday where he met with BiH Presidency members. Holbrooke expressed US Government appreciation of the BiH Presidency initiative to make 21November, the date the Dayton Agreement was signed, a BiH national holiday. Holbrooke was positive about the atmosphere at the BiH presidency session adding that all three members of the Presidency were determined to help all refugees return to their homes. Speaking about the problem of corruption in BiH, Holbrooke stressed this was a major problem and that more has to be done in fighting it or the International Community and US might reduce financial assistance to BiH. BiH Presidency Chairman Ante Jelavic announced a new set of measures the Presidency will undertake to fight corruption, first of which will be the balancing taxes in both BiH entities. Jelavic handed Holbrooke a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the Presidency for his efforts in bringing peace to BiH.

Silajdzic statements about President Tudjman destabilize region – Jelavic cabinet

“Recent statements by BiH Council of Ministers Co-chairman Haris Silajdzic regarding the Croatian President were stimulus for the disintegration of BiH and destabilization of the entire region” said a press release issued on Wednesday by Ante Jelavic’s Foreign Policy Advisor Drazenko Primorac. Such stamens are harmful for the previously determined directions of BiH foreign policy and the BiH Presidency is about to take appropriate measures, Primorac concluded.

Petritsch introduces decision on public RTV corporation in RS

High Representative Wolfgang Petrich announced a decision that should bring the RS closer to European standards in RTV broadcasting. The decision introduces changes and amendments to the law on the public RTV corporation in the RS which should remove some serious violations of European broadcasting standards. The changes support the principles of editorial independence, financial transparency and pluralism in area of culture. The objective of the decision is to make the RS public RTV corporation serve the people of the RS without any political interference. In accordance to this decision, the name SRT is to be changed to RTV RS.

Purivatra will not be member of new BiH broadcasting corporation board

RTV BiH denies recent speculations by the media that RTV BiH General Director Mirsad Purivatra is about to become a member of the Establishing Board for the new BiH broadcasting corporation. Purivatra was appointed RTV BiH General Director in August 1998 and he will continue this duty until the final transition of RTV BiH into a new public service.

SDA objects to BiH temporary election law

The SDA Presidency discussed the draft election law for BiH and curriculum for the 1999/2000 BiH school year. The SDA made several objections and gave a few suggestions to the permanent election law. The biggest objection regards the P2 form that introduces ethnic ghettoization and prevents refugee returns. Speaking about the curriculum for the next school year, the SDA stressed that it will reject any curriculum that would bring segregation of schools and students on an ethnic basis.

Court police attempt to arrest Dani Editor-in-Chief Senad Pecanin

Sarajevo Court Police attempted to arrest independent magazine Dani Editor-in-Chief Senad Pecanin on the Dani premises in Sarajevo Wednesday. Police wanted to force Pecanin to attend the court trial of the private suit by Libyan President Moamar El Gadafi and Libyan Embassy against the magazine said a press release issued by Dani on Wednesday.
