High Representative Christian Schmidt met with Bishop Bertram Johannes Meier of Augsburg, Chair of the Commission for World Church Affairs and the Sub-Commission for Interreligious Dialogue of the German Bishops’ Conference.

The High Representative shared an overview of the current political situation and the state of interreligious cooperation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, underlining the important role of religious leaders in promoting dialogue and positive societal change.

Their cooperation and outreach reflect centuries of coexistence and Bosnia and Herzegovina’s rich multiethnic fabric, making a vital contribution to reconciliation. This enduring spirit remains strong, with the vast majority of citizens in Bosnia and Herzegovina continuing to uphold a longstanding tradition of mutual respect and good neighbourly relations.” said High Representative Schmidt.

He underlined his position that freedom of religion must be fully respected, and that any interference with the ability of Muslims, Catholics, Orthodox Christians, Jews, or other believers to practice their faith is unacceptable.
