At the invitation of Minister-President Daniel Günther, High Representative Christian Schmidt met with the leadership of the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. During the discussions, the High Representative noted the considerable concern expressed by his interlocutors regarding recent developments in Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly in Republika Srpska.
The announced early departure of Christian Schmidt from the position of High Representative was discussed and received with regret and concern, particularly given its potential impact on the stability and transparency of the elections scheduled for 4 October.
In Schleswig-Holstein, which has extensive experience in the integration of the Danish and Frisian population groups as well as minorities such as Bosniaks, Roma, and others, the High Representative advocated for further cooperation with Bosnia and Herzegovina and its municipalities. Reference was made to the very good cooperation between Commissioner for Minority Issues Johannes Callsen and the city of Bijeljina. Schmidt expressed his gratitude for the supportive attitude of the Schleswig-Holstein state government toward Bosnia and Herzegovina.
During his meeting with Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister for European Affairs, Cornelia Schmachtenberg, High Representative discussed continued support for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s path toward European integration.
High Representative Schmidt further emphasized the importance of continuing to support those actors in Bosnia and Herzegovina who work alongside citizens and represent their interests as key drivers of the country’s path toward European Union membership, a path currently blocked by the destructive forces within the country.
