Brcko Supervisor Amends the Law on Police

Brcko Supervisor Susan Johnson today issued a Supervisory Order that amends the Law on Police. The Brcko District Assembly had an opportunity to pass this legislation itself, but failed to do. The new, amended Law on Police will grant the Independent Board for Selection and Review a new competency to evaluate the work of the Chief of Police in a politically neutral fashion.

The current Law on Police requires the Chief of Police to present reports to the Assembly every month. The Assembly has failed to consider these reports in a responsible way; it has persistently used them as a platform for political attacks upon the Chief of Police. This interferes with the ability of the Chief of Police to perform his duties effectively.

The Supervisory Order also instructs the Assembly to refrain from considering any of the Chief of Police’s reports until such time as the Chief of Police submits his next annual report.

This Order has immediate effect.
