Ownership and urgency key to ensuring prosperity in Brčko

Principal Deputy High Representative and Brčko District Supervisor Michael Scanlan attended today a meeting of the Project Implementation Unit for the Modernisation of the Brčko Port. The Supervisor once again underscored the importance of this project, not only for Brčko and the immediate region but for the entire country. In this respect, he urged all participants to invest additional efforts to speed up the administrative procedures for the timely and successful completion of the third stage of the project, which includes the new rail and road access to the port, as well as corporate governance reform of the Public Company “Brčko Port” Ltd.

The Supervisor continued his conversations with caucuses in the Brčko District Assembly, and today he met with representatives of PDP, US, SBiH, and the BH Bloc. He reiterated the need for urgency when it comes to implementing the ongoing infrastructure projects and adopting this spring a new Civil Service Law to ensure an effective, service-oriented, and accountable public administration in the District.

The Supervisor also highlighted the need for a sense of urgency when it comes to energy initiatives, including the adoption in the spring of modern legislation on renewable energy sources, and energy efficiency. This will create new investment opportunities in the energy sector as well as complement the ongoing program for the energy efficiency retrofitting of public buildings and the development of a Green Cities Action Plan. Collectively, this will enable Brčko residents to see a shift towards affordable, sustainable, green energy in the District that also contributes to the growth of private-sector jobs.

Supervisor Scanlan also visited the new premises of the Brčko District Anti-Corruption Office and the Commission for Assessing Conflict of Interest. He stressed that an efficient and accountable  public administration, free from corruption and political patronage, will enable the District authorities to meet their obligation to provide good governance to the citizens. It will also create a conducive atmosphere for attracting business investors and donors to implement initiatives that will contribute to prosperity and a better life in the District.
