In order to encourage BiH citizens to take the initiative and start up small businesses, and to emphasise the key role of small and medium sized enterprises in job creation and in BiH's economic development, OHR has produced a TV series "Business on My Street" - 15 five-minute programs on successful small businesses, stories about people who, despite an unfavourable business environment, managed to succeed.

The High Representative, Paddy Ashdown, along with other representatives of the international community and the BiH authorities, laid flowers at the memorial to the victims of the helicopter accident near Fojnica, on the fifth anniversary of the accident. We honour the memory of the twelve who died: Peter Backes, Livio Beccaccio, Andrzej Buler, David Kriskovich, Leah Melnick, Charles Morpeth, William Nesbitt, Marvin Padgett, Thomas Reinhardt, Jurgen Schauf, Georg Stiebler and Gerd Wagner.

Entity Ministers of Education sign a letter of intent to implement the principals of the Bologna Declaration in BiH universities.The Bologna Declaration provides for the general recognition of courses offered at European universities and thus makes it easier for students to complete modules of their degree courses at different universities and in different countries.

The High Representative, Wolfgang Petritsch, mets the Austrian President, Thomas Klestil. The High Representative briefed the Austrian President on recent political developments in Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially with regard to the reform of the Entity Constitutions and the reform of the judicial system.

The High Representative, Wolfgang Petritsch, visited various sites of religious, historical and cultural importance in Herzegovina that are in the process of reconstruction. The High Representative was accompanied by Amra Hadzimuhamedovic, Secretary of the newly reconstituted Annex 8 Commission, and Dzihad Pasic, Director of the BiH National Monument Protection Institute. The HR also met with various leaders of BiH's main religious communities and elected representatives from Slolac and Mostar including Stolac Mayor, Zeljko Obradovic, Mostar Mufti Smajkic, Chair of the Municipal Council, Zoran Turkovic and President of the Mostar Jewish Community, Zoran Mandelbaum.

The High Representative, Wolfgang Petritsch, visits "Zene za Zene" workshop in Sarajevo on the eve of International Women's Day (8 March). Zene za Zene is a domestic NGO which provides skills training and micro-credits to help women set up their own businesses. During his visit, the High Representative spoke with concern about increasing reports of domestic violence in BiH, in the vast majority of cases against women and children.

Vecernji List awards ceremony for Personalities of the Year 2001, held at Hotel Ero in Mostar. The winner of "The Person of the Year" award was Mijo Brajkovic. The award for the "Success of the Year" went to Danis Tanovic, the director of No Man's Land. The current Miss BiH, Ana Mirjana Racanovic, won the "Sympathy of the Year" award. The High Representative to BiH, Wolfgang Petritsch, won the "Media Press" award, chosen by journalists as the person most widely represented in the media during 2001. "The Feat of the Year" award was presented to Dr. Zdenko Herceg, who discovered a gene which prevents the progress of cancer

The High Representative for BiH, Wolfgang Petritsch, advocates Bosnia and Herzegovina's membership of the Council of Europe, during the Council's Parliamentary Assembly debate on this issue. At the end of the debate the Parliamentary Assembly voted in favour of Bosnia and Herzegovina's accession and sent a recommendation to this effect to the Council's Committee of Ministers. In the margins of the debate, the High Representative also met with the new President of the Parliamentary Assembly, Peter Schieder, and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Walter Schwimmer.

Dnevni Avaz awards ceremony for the Avaz Personalities of the Year. In the International category, Manfred Dauster, the head of the OHR Anti-Fraud Department, and Peter Nicholl, the governor of the BiH Central Bank were recipients of the award; in the Domestic category, the Personalities of the Year were film director Danis Tanovic, and heart surgeon Emir Kabil. Speaking at the ceremony, the High Representative, Wolfgang Petritsch, who won the award last year, noted that artists, intellectuals and civic-minded individuals will provide the wellspring of ideas for a prosperous democracy in BiH.
