Business On My Street - Plot summary

1. “Margus” – Trebinje

Momir Mastilovic, graduate economist, was in the trade business for a long time and was faced with the problem of collecting invoice payments on a daily basis. Instead of money, one of his debtors offered him machinery for manufacturing of plastic joinery. Momir started production very quickly and is now employing 6 people. 

2. “Una–rafting” –Bihać

Senad Zulic has spent his whole life on the Una as a canoeist, but only after his visit to Atlanta as a member of the national Olympic team did he realize that a successful business can be built on natural resources. Upon his return to BiH, he took a loan, bought boats and established the Una Rafting company - one of the more successful tourist businesses.

3. “Kana” – Sarajevo

Narcisa Kavazovic is a refugee from Doboj. In 1996 she returned from Spain and started a business with two neighbors and a borrowed sewing machine in an abandoned garage in the Sarajevo suburb of Ilidza, the same business that she ran in Doboj before the war - making pillows and bed sheets. As her business grew, she decided to invite her sister to join her. Today, their company, Kana, employes 23 people and is one of the leading bed linen manufacturers in BiH.

4. “Weltplast” – Posušje

Franjo  Siric abandoned the comfortable positionof technical manager in a local company and started a private business with one machine in the family garage. That was 20 years ago. Today, Siric owns "Weltplast", manufacturer of plastic tubes applying highest the European standards and worth KM 12 million. 

5. “Spektar” – Banja Luka

Miroslav Vukajlovic lived in Austria for seven years. Upon returning to BL, he decided to use the knowledge he had acquiredand establish a private employment agency, "Spektar". Many BL youths were able to get a job thanks to his agency. Miroslav's long-term strategy is to expand the market to the whole of BiH and establish cooperation between educational institutions and employers.

6. “Ekmek” – Zenica

Two cousins, Haris  and Amer, used to be owners of grocery stores in Zenica. Unhappy with the quality and irregular deliveries, they decided to produce their own bread… initially, only for their shops… Today, they have the best bakery in the region, they are in the process of establishing a mill and are supplying bread to their shops and 130 other grocery stores throughout the  region.  

7. “MTN” – Pale

A female owner of a sawmill is not common in this part of the world. Novka Suko comes from a family with a long tradition of being in the wood processing business. She is an extraordinarily capable and energetic woman who knows what she wants and how to make it come true.

8. Stolarija “Kraljevići” – Tomislavgrad

The war is over and it is difficult to find a job. Reconstruction of houses damaged in the war begins in the Duvno area. Bozo Marincic sees an opportunity in such circumstances. Although he has no previous experience in the wood processing industry, he decides to establish a joinery. Initially, he only produces floorboards and woodwork, assisted by his father, a retired joiner. Customer demand increases over time, there is a demand for furniture, and Ivica employs professional joiners from Zepce and the business begins to expand.

9. “Vlašić- Milk” – Travnik

In spite of the tradition and high quality of Vlasic milk and cheese, individual producers at the Vlasic plateau do not have steady customers for their products. By establishing Vlasic Milk, a link that was missing in the chain between producers and consumers, the solution to this problem is now under way. 

10. “Thema” – Gradačac

In damaged facilities, at the very edge of a minefield, refugees from Modrica start a business - sewing upper parts of shoes for foreign clients. Although this business is providing jobs for 160 refugees from Modrica, these jobs do not yield high profits, so Thema management is contemplating a transition to a process of full production of shoes and moving the factory to Modrica  from where they were originally displaced.

11. “Daenet”- Konjic

Two young men, computer experts, start a computer software design business. Very quickly they gain a good reputation and attract foreign investors… Today, software designed by Danenet in Konjic is sold in European and US markets.

12. “Pajić–prom” – Lukavica

Together with 5 colleagues, employees of the prewar meat industry plant in Sarajevo, Simes, Slobodan  Pajic opens a butcher's shop and starts a meat industry business.

13. “Šabić”– Sarajevo

Hairdressing has been  a tradition of the Sabic family for over 200 years. The father and his two sons have perfected their craft to the level of an art. Education and membership in well-known international hairdressing academies and continuous perfecting of skills lead to results..The Sabics own a prestigious hairdressing parlor chain and are agents of the L'Oreal professional line of products for BiH and a recognizable brand name in the domestic market...

14. “Birikont” – Banja Luka

Mira Zvonar used to work as head of financial department in a successful BL company. She believed that she could do better and more. She left her job and opened a private accounting firm. Initially, she was the only employee - today, Birokont employs an additional staff of 20 and is expanding its business to the field of providing financial and advisory services.

15. “Bekto International” – Goražde

Bekto Redzo, a successful businessman, originally from Gorazde, revives the manufacturing of plastic and metal tools and items. Bekto International operates in line with the highest European standards, exports a significant portion of its products, employs over 100 people and is the vanguard of development in the Gorazde Canton…
